Description
Thank you for visiting. We have acquired a large collection of more than 40 of the original 61 plates and 2 maps which were published in the first edition of Captain Cook's account of his voyages in the South Pacific in 1784. These plates were purchased as a group by one collector almost 100 year ago and have since been stored together. They fit the guidelines of the engravings which were created for the first edition, as each leaf measures 23" x 17" and the paper is of the period. Many of the leaves show light rips, tears and the occasional paper loss around the edges. These are perfect for framing, as nearly all of the engravings are clean and bright. The full title of the original edition of the book was
A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Undertaken, by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere, to Determine the Position and Extent of the West Side of North America; Its Distance from Asia; and the Practicability of a Northern Passage to Europe. Performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty’s Ships the Resolution and Discovery, in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780
. The atlas volume is the most desirable because the plates were exquisite and were the first exposure the English had to images of the South Pacific. We are listing each plate individually and will provide many photos to detail the condition of each. As I mentioned above, the majority of the plates do show wear around the edges, including some which have small remnants of tape along the outer edges.
This is labeled Plate 8 and entitled "A View at Anamooka". In solid condition with some light general soiling, as shown below. There is some rubbing to the outer edge of the plate and a hint of soiling/foxing, as shown. The engraving itself measures 19 5/8" x 8 1/2" and is very striking, with the remnants of one piece of tape along the bottom edge. The inset of the engraving plus the title measures 21" x 10 1/2". Perfect for framing, an arresting image, and an amazing piece of history. The names on the bottom edge of the image are J. Webber del. and W. Byrne Sc.

We use the traditional grading system for books and magazines. The grades are Fine, Near Fine (NF) + or -, Very Good (VG) + or -, Good (G) + or -, Fair and Poor. I can't think of anything that we will be listing here which will be worse than Very Good or Good. For magazines, the grades will be Near Mint+(which will be our best grade as we don't use Mint for used or collectible magazines because any circulated magazine will have some damage, no matter how imperceptible) or -, Excellent+ or -, Very Good+ or -, Good or Poor.
-Fine or Near Mint+: Little to no wear, with at most one or two minor flaws.
-Near Fine or Excellent: Light wear, described in the listing, may contain a small marking in the book by a former owner. Possibly a bumped corner or a mark. Magazine will show a little wear, probably appears to have been read.
-Very Good (both categories): A little more wear, maybe some creasing or soiling on a magazine; definitely read. Book showing some light marks on the covers, maybe a bumped corner or two. Both should be clean inside unless noted.
-Good: Significant wear, with some soiling and probably some light rips or tears. Books are significantly worn, soiled and sunned. Very well read.
