Description
This gorgeous bowler (sometimes referred to as a “Derby Bowler”) is perfect for any occasion, wherever “sophisticated” casual is the dress code. It certainly has that unique Eric Javits look! The hat is made of stiffly woven natural raffia. (It is NOT a “Squishee”.) What puts the design over the top is a 4 ¼” wide flower made with cork beads woven with wire to form an 8-petal flower. The colored beads are strung with alternating rows of cocoa and natural tan. There is a very thin coiled brass wire that adds special interest to the larger petals.
Someone asked a question about the circumference: Here is my answer! I come from Texas “cow country” where wearing Western hats is very commonplace. (When you are riding a horse, the last thing you want is for your hat to go flying off!) So, I retained the habit of wearing hats fairly far down on my head, closer to my eyebrows. When I initially measured it, I measured deep inside the bowl. That gave me a 21" circumference. I measured it again this morning. This time I didn't measure so far down into the "bowl". That changes the circumference to a “normal” way of wearing a hat , i.e., a little over 23 1/2". The rolled brim is 10” from one side to the other. The height of the crown is 6”. The hat weighs 5 ounces, plus the weight of packing material.
Tidbit: The bowler (derby) hat, which features a rounded crown, was originally created by London hat-makers in 1849. It has traditionally been worn with semi-formal and informal attire.
