I picked this stone up at a garage sale in Weedsport New York. The man who sold it to me told me it was his grandfather's and his grandfather was particular about keeping his tools sharp. The man looked to be around my age (63) so his grandfather was probably born in the late 1800s.Whatever the case, this is not like the typical old oilstones I get at estate and garage sales. It's the color that's different. It's a reddish brown, or mocha color. You can see it pretty well in the photos.
I spent a few minutes cleaning and flattening the face of this stone on a new piece of oiled 220-grit wet/dry sandpaper over a piece of 1/4" plate glass.
You can see some lighter spots where I flattened it a bit. But I stopped working it over the paper after awhile.Β This stone is downright hard!
The stone measures 1-7/8" x 6-7/8" x 15/16"
The wood piece it fits into measures 3" x 8" x 1-1/8"
I thought the stone was fixed tight in the wood but after taking the listing photos, I managed to remove it. The back side was dirty. I washed it with detergent and a scrub brush, then let it air dry and coated it with oil. The last 2 listing photos show the back of the stone (iPhone photos taken outdoors). You can see it has a chip out of one edge, but it's in decent flat shape.
I put a strong flashlight up to the stone and there is no translucence.
If you want a fine, old, hard, natural oilstone, this is it.
I will promptly ship this very nice whetstone and wood base (there is no cover) to you by USPS Priority.
Thank you.
