This is an Old beautiful Ancestor Samban Figure Plaque from the Iatmul , Yamok Village, Papua New Guinea. This ancestor figure in a circular frame serves as a guardian for valuables and ritual objects which is hung on the Samban. Male and female ancestors of power are called to duty as guardians. This figure plaque is integral to the rituals and ceremonies of Papua New Guinea. Always a representation of an ancestral spirit, figure and mask are produced using a wide variety of materials. This figure plaque is also revered in the belief that they allow connection to the various spirits they represent. The plaque has cowrie shell eyes and is decorated with clan symbols. Traditional colors used are red, white and black, (with some shades of yellow, brown and orange). Pigments are all made by the artist using natural materials (Black: charcoal/oils, White: lime/oils & Red: chewed betel nut). A wonderful and unique piece of Papua New Guinea art that would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.Late 20th-Century
