Description
For auction is a booklet entitled "Leyte", one fo the Philippine islands. The US considered Leyte critical to the defense of the Philippines and the anticipated invasion of Japan. The Sixth Army attacked on October 20, 1944; the campaign lasted some 2 months. Fighting was fierce, and Japan lost four army divisions and 26 major warships. The US had heavy casualties also, partly as a result of incomplete planning and supply shortages. The US did not find Leyte to be capable of supporting a major base, due in part to faulty or incomplete intelligence and topography.US Army Campaigns of World War II - Leyte
